Gillian Bickley’s published work includes six poetry collections, one work of collected poetry, and non-fiction with a Hong Kong focus. Her poetry has been translated and published in several languages, including Arabic, Chinese, Italian and Romanian, and has been anthologized including regularly in the Hong Kong Women in Publishing (HKWiPS) annual publication, “IMPRINT”. It has also appeared in the HKWC 2019 anthology, “Coming to our Senses”, and most recently in “Where Else: An International Hong Kong Poetry Anthology (Verve, UK, 2023)”. She has published books, book-chapters and articles on 19th century Hong Kong personalities and social life. Her contribution towards Hong Kong history began with the biography of the founder of Hong Kong Government Education, “The Golden Needle: The Biography of Frederick Stewart (1836-1889)” (1997), now translated and published in Chinese (2022).
With her husband, Verner Bickley, she co-founded the publishing arm of Proverse Hong Kong and also the annual international Proverse Prizes for unpublished work submitted in English (may be in translation). She was born and educated in the United Kingdom, has been a full-time faculty member in Nigeria, Hong Kong and New Zealand, and has lived mostly in Hong Kong since 1970.
