Verner was born and educated in the UK and spent most of his life in Asia. His first work of autobiography, Footfalls Echo in the Memory, describes, with anecdotes and analysis, his life in India, Sri Lanka, Singapore, Burma, Indonesia and an early visit to Hong Kong. Steps to Paradise and Beyond: Hawaii to China, Saudi Arabia, Hong Kong and elsewhere continues the story. With his wife, Gillian Bickley, he co-founded the publishing arm of Proverse Hong Kong and also the two annual international Proverse Prizes (the Proverse Prize for unpublished non-fiction, fiction or poetry; and the Proverse Poetry Prize for a single poem). Verner often enlivened Gillian’s book talks with readings.
Verner wore many hats. He was well-known as an educationist, applied linguist, broadcaster, voice artist, adjudicator, and scholar. He was Chairman Emeritus of the registered non-political educational charity, the English-Speaking Union (Hong Kong), a membership organisation that provides opportunities for people to use English in many contexts.
